From the US Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship!

WIG Members, Judith Kyrinis and (caddy) Ellen Wallace, were California-bound last week. At the destination – the scenic Monterey Peninsula Country Club – was an event that drew 132 competitors from around the world to take on 6,093 yards of challenging golf course from October 4 to 9. The Mid-Am was open to any female golfer of 25 years and older as of October 4 and whose handicap index was 9.4 or lower.
Judith competed on an exemption based on her previous year’s result. She was one of the few to post a red number on day two of the stroke play portion, earning her a T23 position. Half the field was cut following stroke play and the remaining 64 players advanced to the Round of 64 match play.
Judith came out of the match play gate with the lead, after which it see-sawed for a few holes, and by hole 11 she was 3-up. She and her fellow competitor traded winning holes until 16 when Judith officially claimed the win.
It was back in the saddle the same day, as Judith – as always, with Ellen on the bag – advanced to the Round of 32 match play. This time her competitor immediately built up a two-hole lead. Undaunted, Judith won the two back and heaped another on top of that to take the lead by hole 5. After her opponent went up one, Judith once more turned up the heat and won 3 of the next 5 holes, leading by 2 when they reached 17. Another win.
Next was the Round of 16 match play. The lead went back and forth until 15 when Judith’s opponent managed to get ahead by 2. By 17, Judith had won back a hole to cut the lead down by one. A bogie on 18, however, meant Judith’s run at this year’s Mid-Am was over.
Her top-tier results earn Judith an exemption into the 2026 edition of the US Women’s Mid-Amateur.
Congratulations on your tenacity and grit, Judith. You and Ellen have done us proud. We look forward to the excitement of the 2026 contest.
